What incidents and events have made India proud?



Every nation has things the citizens can be proud of. Here are the things for which I'm proud.


  1. The birthplace of a great many thinkers - Gandhi, Ashoka, Chanakya (who helped create first Indian empire and his book "Arthasastra" is still a great reading for strategists and planners) and Aryabatta (one of the great mathematicians in India) and located near to Nepal (where the birthplace of Shakyamuni Buddha lies just 20 km away from Indian border).
  2.  It is the birthplace of the 3rd (Hinduism), 4th (Buddhism), 7th (Jaininsm) and 10th (Sikhism) largest religions of the world. Besides that it is the largest Zorastrian and Bahaii country, 2nd largest Muslim country in the world, 4th largest Christian country in Asia. It is also probably the only place in the world where Jews never faced a historical persecution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His... - We love all religions (yes, I do agree that in a 1.2 billion population there are some nasty elements who try out of their way to create trouble).
  3. We confound your common understanding of the world. We jumped to democracy before we became rich, we jumped into services before even getting into manufacturing, we could survive with 22 official languages. If you spent some time in India, you would realize that it is mindboggling to comprehend how the system even works.
  4. Of the top 20 largest languages of the world, 5 are from India (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil). We also have 12 other major languages. Besides that we are slowly growing to become the largest English-speaking country in the world (we will get there in 10 years).
  5. Although we are quite poor and heterogeneous, we still remain a democratic nation. 65 years ago many people predicted that Indian would implode on its weight of diversity.
  6. We have got a 7000-9000 year history of civilization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His...) and atleast the last 3000 years of it is relatively unbroken (Vedic/Hindu practices still remain dominant).
  7. Although we are dirt poor, under-policed and over-populated, India is probably among the safest countries (in terms of crime statistics). http://www.nationmaster.com/grap...
